"Death by Chocolate"
By Craig Sodaro
S.T.A.R.'s 50th Production |
|
This comedy/mystery
by popular playwright Craig Sodaro features a private eye named Nick Noir, who
botched his last case and has fallen on hard times. Nick has just been
presented with what may be his last opportunity. A local coffee shop known for its signature
drink, Death by Chocolate, has been in the news since the drink's name came
true for a fellow named Vinnie, who died while drinking it. Business has
fallen off, and the shop might have to close unless Nick can figure out what
happened to Vinnie...
The shop is
populated by mysterious, oddball customers, who are waited on by the
owners - twin sisters who couldn't be more opposite - and an obnoxious waitress. Nick is assisted by his trusty secretary, Selma, who would do
anything for him. He attempts to solve the puzzle, but often gets the pieces
in wrong. After a second death under the same circumstances and the
disappearance of the waitress, Selma disguises herself as a psychic, and -
with the assistance of her ever-present BlackBerry - uncovers some deep
secrets. Armed with a motive and opportunity for each suspect, Nick weaves
his way through a lot of false deductions to a surprising conclusion...
Including the brief
intermission (during which several types of chocolate will be
available!), the play is still well under two hours. Combined with a visit
to your favorite restaurant before or after, this production would make a great night out
for couples, friends or families.
