Frequently Asked Questions
Q: A:
Who runs the group? A board of directors.
I noticed that your plays are performed in a school building. Is S.T.A.R. part of the school? We enjoy a great working relationship with the leadership of Home School, where we rent space, and also with Lyons Elementary District 103, of which Home School is a part, but none of S.T.A.R.'s leaders or board members are affiliated with the school or district.
What types of plays do you usually produce? We tend to choose either well-known plays (often comedies or mysteries) or those of respected authors. All our shows are suitable for general audiences.
What happens to the money you make from your shows? We are proud to say that we operate in the black with minimal outside support. All monies left after expenses are deposited into our interest-bearing bank account to finance future productions. S.T.A.R. is recognized by the IRS as a nonprofit corporation. No board member, actor, or crew member receives a salary at this time. We do, however, pay a nominal fee to experienced directors and musical accompanists as required.
I've never acted before, but I've always wanted to try it. Can I get involved without any experience? If you feel comfortable in front of people, start by auditioning for a play to see how you like it. Our auditions are generally what's called "cold readings," which means you are handed a script (or a few pages), given a few minutes to look it over with the others with whom you'll be reading, then asked to go up on the stage and read it aloud with feeling. If you're not cast, you might want to offer to work behind the scenes on the current play and plan to audition for the next one.
How do you get cast in a play?

Open auditions are held about two months before each production. No roles are pre-cast. Decisions are made solely by the director of the particular play. Make sure you're on our mailing list so you don't miss anything!

I'm not interested in being on stage. Are there other ways I can become involved? There are many ways to participate. Click here to read about some of them. Or feel free to email or call us anytime.
Does a person have to be a member of S.T.A.R. in order to participate? S.T.A.R. has no members and therefore no membership requirement for participation.
I'm a senior citizen on a fixed income, and I'd like to come to one of your shows. Do you offer a senior discount? We sure do! Seniors (and students) enjoy a 10 percent discount at the door. Just ask at the box office before any performance.
Do you have an email list I can join that announces upcoming productions and auditions? If you'd like to be informed via email of our upcoming productions twice a year, please sign up for our mailing list and include your email address.
I tend to get hungry about halfway through a play. What should I do?

Just follow your nose to the goodies offered for nominal prices during intermission!
